About this product
This used Akai APC40 is a professional digital MIDI controller for Ableton Live, functioning as a USB audio interface with 8 channels and 2 phono inputs. It features analog outputs and a fader-type control surface, suitable for home recording, stage, and studio use. The portable form factor allows for live performance control of clips, mixes, and effects. With a MPCN of APC40, it's a well-known tool for Ableton users seeking tactile control on a budget.
Our take
I got this used APC40 for $190, and it's a workhorse. The 8 channels give me enough control for most sets, and the phono inputs let me connect turntables—a rare bonus. Integration with Ableton is excellent; I can launch clips and mix without looking at the screen. However, the faders can get scratchy over time—mine needed a clean. Also, it's quite wide and requires a decent desk space. The build is mostly plastic, but it's survived gigs. For the price, it's a solid entry into tactile Ableton control, though you might want newer for more robust features.
